Jayadratha - Hand Painted Mural Painting from the Mahabaratha series
This beautiful Painting is part of a series of paintings depicting the story and characters in Mahabaratha. The story of "Jayadratha" is as below.
Once, the Pandavas went on a hunt, leaving Draupadi in the hermitage with Maharshi Dhaumya. Jayadratha, the kaurava princess Dussala's husband, while passing through the kamyaka forest, saw her and felt drawn towards her. Notwithstanding her remonstrations, he forced Draupadi into his chariot and rode away.
The Pandavas, reading the omens and sensing some problem afoot, returned to the hermitage. On being informed of the vile act perpetrated by Jayadratha, they pursued him. A serious fight ensued at the end of which Bhima bound Jayadratha and threw him at Yudhistira's feet. Out of consideration for their aunt Gandhari and their sister Dussala, Yudhishtira decided to free the cruel Jayadratha.
Unable to bear the insult, Jayadratha performed severe penances and sought Lord Shiva's blessings. He obtained the boon that in battle, he would be able to check all the Pandavas expecting Arjuna, for a day.
