Arjuna was Drona's favourite student, whom he promised to make an invincible archer. As Drona's fame as a guru spread far and wide, many flocked to Hastinapura to become his puplis. Among them was a tribal boy of Nishada race, named Ekalavya. Drona had to reject him.
But the boy was undeterred. He returned to the forest, made a clay idol of Drona, worshipped it , and began practice in right earnest. In due course of time, when his skill in archery threatened to outmatch Arjuna's , Drona sought Eklavya's right thumb as guru dakshina, fee offered as a tribute to a teacher. Without any hesitation and with a smiling countenance, Ekalavya chopped off his thumb and offered it to Drona
